Attempt to do 100mph on flat with self-powered bicycle

I also wanted to know why he stuck himself and a bicycle into a giant condom. It certainly won't save him if he comes tumbling down at 100Mph whistling.gif

We can give him one though for at least trying to wear protection ......

He was disqualified because it wasn't a normal/standard bicycle. There's now two types of hour records, one with "normal" bikes (read older) and one with "other". You have to draw the line somewhere.

Yes, actually Chris Boardman's 'Best Human Effort' - ie. less regulated category - hour record has stood since 1996, which is remarkable, not least because he has never been implicated in any kind of doping - not to say he didn't have the opportunity - pre-EPO test days - to do so, just that he has been quite outspoken about it and was never named or implicated as far as I know, except for one very marginal occasion involving hearsay.

Admittedly 56km/h for an hour is a hell of a daunting bar to raise.

The other more regulated record was bested as recently as 2009 or 10 I think by a dodgy Czech rider - previously Boardman had that as well.

Boardman and Obree are really the only hour record guys who were clean - or seemingly clean at least - I would say in Boardman's case. The rest of the big-name hour record guys were pretty dodge - Big Mig, Rominger, Moser. Merckx was done for amphetamines but I don't think the gains from that are comparable to mucking about with your blood.

Luke, any idea of the fastest TT in a Tour of about 50kays?

Posted (edited)

See http://en.wikipedia....dual_time_trial for some stats. The two fastest time trials longer than 20km are shown below. The Millar one is insanely fast!

Greg LeMond 54,545 km/h Versailles - Paris (24,5 km) 1989

David Millar 54,361 km/h Pornic - Nantes (49 km) 2003

Remember, the hour record is done on a wooden cycling track.

Ja, if I remember correctly Millar had a huge tailwind on that occasion. There's a youtube clip somewhere. This was of course also before he reinvented himself as self-appointed ambassador for clean cycling..

Edit: here's the clip, stage 19, it was raining, Ullrich went balls to the wall and crashed trying to take yellow off Armstrong
