Tapered vs. straight steerer

I recently bought a Mongoose Canaan Team frame. I'm now looking for a fork, unsure of whether to go for straight or tapered steerer/head and whether my frame is compatible with a tapered head.

I've read that tapered is a big benefit on 29ers, but does it hold true for a 26inch like mine?
