VINTAGE VITUS DURAL FRAME SEEN AT PAWN SHOP

Recommended Posts

Whilst doing my trolling in pawn shops I came across this bike. Maybe someone would be interested in this vintage bike as a resoration project. I am in the process of restoring a fixie so I have to let this one pass. The price from the shop is R1500 for the frame as is. The shop is called 24 Hour Pawn and they are at 53 Kelly Road, Jet Park, Kempton Park

(I have no financial interest at the shop - this is merely an alert for someone that might be intrested.)

I always lusted after one of these, but I've been told that riding them now might be dangerous to one's heath. Apparently, they are glued together, and they tend come apart as the glue has become old and brittle. Same problem with the Alan frames of the same era.

They're beautiful bikes indeed! I just did a little google look-around and most guys think the "unglueing" is a bit hyped. Others have reglued with JB-Weld (whatever that is, but I doubt it has anything to do with a certain well-known Hubber). Given that we've got one of the world's best glue companies here on our doorstep ...

Not quite, the Vitus had aluminum lugs, bonded to aluminum tubes. Carbon frames are moulded using carbon fibre cloth, impregnated with resin and baked in an autoclave. The first carbon bikes had aluminum lugs bonded to carbon fibre tubes, Vitus had such a model, as well as Alan, and as far a I know Look too. That style of frame was quickly replaced by the "moulded" carbon frames (Time and Kestrel spring to mind). There's a old(er) guy who rides with the JHB South group who rides one of the old Time bikes, it's seen lots of miles, but is very nice. JMTCW
