4. Damp Roots - Well a challenge indeed. Combining recently developed technical skills with never ridden over so many roots before made this a bit tricky. I was given instructions and some tips before we took on the Red route and I was careful. The day saw me come close to a wipe out a few times but the tyres had nothing to do with it - I am told that no tyre can really handle this particular obstacle 100%

Excuse me....but I seem to recall one particular incident where you made the aquaintence(sp?) of one particular root...? I remember you doing a very, sudden and close inspection...?

At least that was my impression after hearing a sliding sound, a dull thud and then looking around and seeing you just about hugging that root...?

You don't remember....? Geez....considering how much you complained....whine whine whine!

This was why we had the whole tyre vs root discussion....you prolly don't remember that either? It was I who said that there isn't really a tyre that can handle a slippery root. It's all technique!

Think you're gonna need a refresher course since you seem rather forgetful lately ConfusedWink

Crossmarks for hardpack, rocky and loose - typical Southern and Eastern Cape conditions.  Schwalbe Nobby Nic's for wet roots, soft, forest, etc. - typical KZN, Sani2C stuff.  Schwalbe is expensive when bought in RSA - you can buy them from German websites for half the price, shipping included.

Pls.....I complained cos SAA bent my frikkin hanger and I had no gears.... But yeah I probably came close to kissing a few roots....they were so inviting after all LOL

And I know it was you who said that.....I can insert your name in the story if you'd like..... "Technical pro and master of wet roots Mint Sauce says that 'no tyre can really handle this particular obstacle 100%' " Big%20smile

I am with Minty when it comes to the cost of Schwalbe. I use Maxxis and Kenda, it just depends on what the LBS has at the time, they are both good, well priced and all are reasonably light. Just go for the tread pattern that suits you best. If all comes to the worst and you get really stuck, then go for Kenda's Nevegals, they may not be very light but they have been rated as the best all round tyres for the last couple of years now and have seen very few complaints. They also go from a wire to tubeless bead, one of which will suit your budget.

The Kenda and Maxxis in general are good tyres' date=' but if youre going tubless the Kenda Nevegals give lots of sealing problems.[/quote']

Never had any problems. I can get the Nevagals pumped and seated without sealant.

I got mine pumped up without sealant with a rubbish old floor pump?!

You need to use an tubeless bead tyre on Mavic UST rims.  These are standard on all UST tubeless tyres, as well as what they call tubeless ready tyres, e.g. Bontrager Revolt Super X TR.  These are in essence the same as the folding version (light casing), but with a UST tubeless bead.  Normal folding will not seal as well on a UST rim.

This quote from a blog:

"... but UST has a lot more to do with the standards of rim hook/tire bead interfaces than it does with whether or not you would need sealant to make the tire hold air. Basically it is a standard that indicates the tire with UST approval and a rim with UST approval are safe to use sans tube."

Any Idea who stocks Maxxis High rollers in Pretoria?

No one, I have looked around at all the shops. FPC can get you some if they order. Otherwise Mikes Bikes in JHB have in stock last time I checked.

do you have a URL for the german tire site? I really like the feel of the racing ralphs, but they are soft and I blew through 3 sets last season, as well as a smart sam. But if I can keep feeding my bike schwalbes at a discount, that would be great.

currently running speed king and geax sagauro, not the same quality of feel though (to me)
