Do some research on how well sodium bicarbonate acts as a buffer to build-up of lactic acid (during high intensity training).

I've tried using it when doing hill repeats. Helps.

What worked for me is proper warm up and cool down, L-Glutamine as much as the daily RDA allows me to take when training hard or leading up to it and try to spin at high cadence once or twice a week. Rest is also important.

Another tool that works is Whey protein, before and after training.

Yep been some very good studies on this which shows it to be effective in prevention of build up and improved times, but does seem to be limited to a relatively short period ie not so usefull in multi hour events.

That's why I use for interval training, esp. hill repeats.

Helps to keep the intensity up.

For the OP, nothing better than a proper warm-down. Then after a hard long ride or race, go for a slow, short 'flush' ride the next day.
