Hope this is the right section for this.

I have a budget of 12k. My current bike hopefully can be sold for around 4k. I actually want to keep my old bike if I can.

Here is my two choices

http://www.scott-sports.com/gb_en/product/380/766/cr1_team

OR

http://www.scott-sports.com/gb_en/product/381/776/speedster_s20

The price difference between the two bikes is almost 6k.

The weight difference is also minimal ,but the Speedster S20 is full on alloy and the CR1 is carbon.

Should I rather save up and get the CR1 Team or go for the slightly heavier S20.

Component wise they look almost identical ,but the S20 have a compact crank would should make a difference.

If everything, down to the last bolt, is the same and it's only the frame that is different, then I would not go for it. R6000 is alot of money for a few grams. But normally the wheels change, the finishing kit is different and all sorts of other stuff. So it's not just the different frame that take up the money.

I agree with mampara, I ride a Scott S20 and have not had a day that I was sorry that I bought it.  Yes the Cr 1 would be nice but if you look at what that extra costs needs to warrant....I would rather spend the extra money on a nice set of wheels.  Just bought Easton Circuits a while ago....very very nice. It is for the same reason that I did not buy the Cr 1

good luck and happy riding

Thanks for the advice so far.

I saw the new S20 at Wayne Pheiffer cycles and it looks stunning.

Had to look twice if the frame was not carbon as the head unit is integrated into the frame without any welds.

Wonder though why they opt for no carbon seat/rear stays. That would have made it even lighter, but I guess it's to save on cost.

Read a couple of very nice reviews and comments from people who bought it.

On my old bike I have Easton Vista SL's and I bet Easton circuits would really be worth putting on the S20 and I get to keep my old bike.

Just looking at the differences between the two bikes

- CR1 obviously is a nicer frame - being carbon it will probably be a little more comfy. Of course its lighter.

- Compact crank on S20 is useful if you're not such a great climber

- Aksium wheels on the CR1 are better than those on the S20.

- About 200g of the CR1 weight-saving over the S20 comes from using fold-up instead of wirebead tyres.

If it was me I'd get the S20.

Wisecrack, that S20 is really nice looking. Everybody will tap it to make sure it's not carbon. I'm sure the shop will swop the compact cranks if you ask them.

I am leaning towards the S20.

Will swop my Easton Vista SL's over from my current bike for the time being.

wisecrack. all is fine asking us what we would buy but it's your money and you must ride the bike for the next 3-5 years. I can't even decide on a frame colour, nevermind a complete bike. good luck on your decision.

personally I think that the CR1 is a fairly good value carbon frame, whereas the speedsters are overpriced compared to similar alu. frames.

If I had the money i would go for the CR1..

also if you carefully check the price differences between the differently specced items you will see where some of the R6k is going (especially bottom of the range shimano wheels on the speedster).

if you dont have the money (or better things to spend the difference on) then the speedster is a good bike anyway - I have an old alu. Scott myself Big%20smile.

I wouldn't let the weight considerations enter your decision - both bikes are not the lightest for the price.

Thanks for the input Gumpole.

Will test ride both tomorrow and decide.

I also had a look at the new Felt F4 at Coimbra cycles http://www.felt.co.za/f4.html and that bike is in the same price range as the CR1 ,but you guys are right even at 12k this is a fairly substantial investment for me and I will feel bad a couple of years along the road when I think to myself damn I should have spent the extra $.

rear seat stays in carbon usually dont save any weight, there is actually not much difference in weight in a lightweight alu or carbon frame.

I think the headset welds are just ground down - does look good though.

If you are worried about the crank either way, ask before you buy and the shop will always swop them out for the same priced other 105 series crank. If you really want to save money ask what discount you will get on either bike without wheels!
