Dave, I just want fewer people kicking me in the swim (and trying to get my goggles off in other ways). Other than that, it's a solo race and I couldn't care less!

Come to the pool tomorrow and we can take turns kicking and scratching each others goggles off as part of the training. That way we will be immune to Garfield.

With excitement running high for the 10th anniversary of IRONMAN South Africa, the race has sold out for the first time meaning many athletes were not able to get in and are now on the waiting list. We now have the chance to give some of these athletes the opportunity to be part of the only IRONMAN on the African continent.

Due to the widespread plea from athletes dearly wanting to be part of the experience, this is a carefully considered step in an effort to allow as many athletes as possible to experience what it is like to race at an IRONMAN.

After implementing the recent changes to the IRONMAN South Africa course, we commissioned a German statistician to run a statistical analysis on the capacity of the course. The analysis shows that with these changes we are now able to safely accommodate increased numbers on the course without compromising on safety and fairness.

It is important to note that we are NOT reopening entries but will instead be accommodating athletes who are currently on the waiting list up to a maximum of 2500 athletes in total.

IRONMAN South Africa has taken place over the last nine years and a big part of the success of the race is owed to those athletes who have been loyal to the brand by being regular participants year after year. To show our appreciation to our loyal athletes we will be offering the first slots to those athletes on the waiting list who have competed in five or more races. Please note that this applies only to those athletes who are already on the waiting list. Thereafter slots will roll down to athletes on the waiting list in chronological order.

The waiting list procedure will remain the same as athletes will receive an email notifying them that a slot has opened and they will have 48 hours to register and make payment to secure the slot. If the full registration and payment process is not completed within 48 hours the slot will roll down to the next person on the waiting list.

With IRONMAN South Africa being the only IRONMAN in Africa, the only option for athletes who cannot race here is to race overseas – something that is not possible for many South African athletes. We have listened to those athletes who want to do the race and feel that it is our duty as race organisers to give athletes the opportunity up to the point where we can safely accommodate those athletes without impacting on race quality.

We look forward to a truly special race for the 10th anniversary of IRONMAN South Africa with a new course and record numbers made up of race stalwarts and first timers alike.

Regards,

Your IRONMAN South Africa Team

That's just bloody awesome. Thanks ironman for proving me right. Greed....That takes the whole significance of the race away. I don't care what all your fancy german tests say. This WILL screw up traffic on the route, especially the swim.

Well done on spoiling a great event for everyone

There will still be around 2000 people on the startline. The drop-out rate is higher than other races as there is no Forrest Gumping through this race!

Swim:

70.3 with 3000 competitors is not an issue. They will just organise the waves. They have learned from previous issues.

Bike:

60000m / 1800 competitors = 33.33 m per bike

90000m / 2500 competitors = 36 m per bike (a lot of the 2500 won't pitch, so you will get more space)

Your argument has no basis. Read in a German accent if you like.

Now go train or don't race if you think it is going to be so k@k.

Well that is your opinion. I don't think it will spoil the race ....

Can you explain how it will screw up traffic and the swim - im quite interested to hear

I entered ironman because I liked the format of it in the past, Since entering everything changed. routes, swim start, entry cap, etc. Since swimming is my strong point and in the past I made up a gap so that I can have a relative open road on the bike, this is out the window since I am starting in the last wave according to my age. I don't have to tell you where that leaves me

I am sure you understand my frustration.

Well there will be wave starts on the swim which will mitigate the traffic somewhat as will the single loop swim.

The double loop bike will mean no more lapping (mostly) which will make it safer I guess.

I am just glad they changed the course - it did get a bit boring.

Race day will be glorious. If you are negative already then it is going to be tough motivating yourself on the way ahead...

It will be great to share the day with another 2,500.

Here is a thought. Challenge Roth has around 5,000 athletes if I am correct.

A couple of comments

Firstly - things in life change. Secondly when you entered they course hadn't been confirmed so in fact you entered without knowing the exact course or final numbers for that matter. Thirdly it is not all about you - it is about giving as many people an opportunity to compete in a once off event in Africa, to raise the profile of the sport, to grow the sports and possibly get more events which would give us, the athletes, more option of races in the future.

IF they do go by waves you will be in a smaller group and as such have an advantage - by the time you catch other groups they would have spread out so I don't see how this 'traffic' would effect you (as you are a good swimmer).

Im still not seeing how it will effect the other traffic - please elaborate

Have the wave starts been confirmed yet?

Obviously wave 1 will be Pro's. Will the other 2 waves be based on sex or age or both?? If age then 18 - 35 or what?

Bright side:- Single loop swim course means you will only have to pass everyone once!
