why do they put the rear suspension upside down?

 

You mean when the shock is upside down?

 

On some frames where space is limited, it allows you to get your bottle in and out easier, as the lockout/floodgate lever sits on the other side if you turn the shock upside down.

 

Other than that, I don't know of a particular reason.
