You mean when the shock is upside down?

 

On some frames where space is limited, it allows you to get your bottle in and out easier, as the lockout/floodgate lever sits on the other side if you turn the shock upside down.

 

Other than that, I don't know of a particular reason.

To lubricate the stantion... could be a reason... that's why gaslifts should be upside down...
