Don't want to start a debate, just a thought.

Morewood, what is so wrong with trying to increase your chances of an entry. What doesn't seem right to me is the parctice of the organisers letting any old rider enter and paying BAIE, regardless of skill level etc, knowing full well that most of them will be wasting their money and time and won't make it past day 3. Thats just wrong. There should be a seeding system before the race (before spending all that money), not during.

Cape Epic 2013:

612 teams entered. 494 finished.

90 individual finishers too.

Attrition:

Teams 19%

Total 12%

Comrades (approximatly)

19 000 runners entered.

17 000 started

10 000 finished

Attrition:

Entered 47%

Started 41%

Despite being one of the toughest ultra endurance events in the world, they manage to produce a high success rate. I would venture a guess that half or more of the non finishers were due to technical issues or injury, rather than insufficient conditioning.

The entry system seems on balance to work quite well. I also don't like it if I enter and I am then not successful, but it p!zz me off even more when I hear that some oke had his whole workforce enter the lottery to get an entry. It also causes havoc when you start informing people that they are successful and then it turns out that they were simply keeping place for someone that already got an entry. I am happy that 2 team mates both enter the lottery, but don't like seeing 18 000 potential entries and 15 000 of those are place keepers.

You have to qualify for the Comrades, which is actually my point, but I get what you are saying about the lottery entries.

Got my entry and it was my third lottery attempt.

I almost missed it as I was waiting for an email to arrive. If you enter the lottery next year check the site constantly for details.
