[Event] Auto Alpina Springs 93.9 East Rand Stereo MTB Race

Plenty of notification of timing chip. The boards were just that number boards, which were used to distinguish between the distances, think of the mess if we did not ride with boards, easy enough for someone to ride short distance then claim long distance.

Only issue i saw is the race was advertised to start 8am but the 20km riders started before this.

All said it was a good race. I really enjoyed it. Thanks to all involved. Marshalling and signage was great.

Note to self: Next time I must just pay attention to timing requirements:huh:

I had a problem with the starting time. I did the 20 km fun run with my daughter and granddaughter. When we got there 7h40 my daughter asked why are so many people at the starting line? I said I don't know, but they will have to wait as the race only starts at 08h00. At 7h50 I am still pumping tyres and a shot goes off signaling the start of the race. We eventually move towards the start line with our white numbers. Everyone shows us to the starting line. One of the marshalls at the starting line said to me in a very irritated voice that the 20 km race already started a few minutes ago. I told him the race was supposed to start at 0800. So we end up starting the race about 10 minutes after everyone else, because this is the first time I hear we were supposed to start 10 minutes earlier. If they added "20 km race starts at 7h50" on the entry forms, I would not have a problem with it and we would have been in time.

That certainly was an issue, perhaps next year they can advise start times. I was under impression that the 66 would start at 8am then 44 and lastly the 20km.

Great race I really enjoyed the route, wind was challenging but I made some friends and we took turns pulling in front.

I feel for the guys without chips, I had mine thanks for someone telling me beforehand. Never heard of a MTB race where you must bring your 'road chip'.

Don't know what to think of the results, I came 16th in the 66km (awesome result for me) - not sure how many chip less competitors were ahead of me!

Ya not having a (timing chip) is a problem if your not from Gauteng ,i normally just use my SAS Board for races but still it was a fun race probably did about a 1.55 for the 44km if my Bryton is accurate .

Hi Guys

Tx for all the (mostly positive) feedback. This was the second year that we as a cycling club were involved in presenting this race and (as last year) we have again learned a lot.

Please accept my sincere apology for the 20km race starting earlier than scheduled. That was wrong and will not happen again. In defence of the starter it has to be said that he realised that it was extremely cold and didn't want the people to stand around too long. Like I said, this was wrong and I apologise for the inconvenience that it caused.

Last year we timed the race using the numbers and this lead to a lot of unhappyness and querries. In order to improve this, we decided to have a timing company do the timing for us this year. This has a significant impact on the cost of presenting the race (no matter which timing company you use). When we compared the different companies, we decided to use Championchip for a couple of reasons. Firstly they have been timing the road race we've been presenting for a couple of years and we've established a good working relationship with them. Furthermore they are well known and do timing for a variety of events.

As a cyclist I understand the frustration of having a couple of timing chips and I have pitched to events with no chip or the wrong chip (like the Jock last year!). We did not, however, foresee that so many people would not notice the fact that the event is timed by Championchip this year. It was stated on all the posters, at the point of on-line entry and where we did any kind of advertising, but from the comments this was not enough and we'll definately try and improve this for next year. The intent was not to confuse or upset people, but to improve on the timing as done last year.

I want to thank all of you for comning out and supporting us on the day. Our main aim was to provide peolpe who love cycling (like us) with a fun, well marked course and from the comments it looks like we've succeeded. I do realise though that the whole experience has to be a pleasant one, and we'll definately improve on the issues raised.

I hope we'll see you again next year!

Kind Regards,

Thank you the race was fantastic. like mentioned the timing problems on my side were due to me not taking notice of what was clearly written on the posters etc.

I look forward to doing this event again.

As mentioned next time just clearly show all the starting times and stick to them
