Changing cassettes - do I need to change rear derailleur and chainset?

I currently use a compact crank and an 11/28 cassette?

Would it matter if I change that to a 12/25 cassette? or do I need to change the chainset too?

What would be the ideal cassette to change to?

All these numbers and ratios are confusing me - Help needed

If you keep the same number of sprockets (ie. 10sp, 9sp etc etc) you'll be fine. Ideal cassette depends on where you ride and how strong you are. If you never use the bottom gear, get a smaller one. If you k@k off in the lowest gear, get a bigger one.
