@Skandalis...Shawswood is a great option. say Hi to Bundy and Micheal whilst you out there. If you need some local tips, PM me lol. PS : karkloof is only 8km from shawswood. I will be out there again tomorrow clearing track in the expectation that everyone comes to ride :) XCO Course is ready to ride!! Dont waste the opportunity ! R30 trail fee covers you for the day for both Howick and karkloof trails. PPS : I live in Howick...but will be down at cacades most days for the next 3 weeks ;) Got UCI Media accreditation so would be stoooopid to miss out on being there :) Everyone who is coming down, if you need any directions or help just let me know. Will try my best to help out where i can

Thanks Griffin!

We'll be heading to the "wrong side" of the road & hit some of the Enduro trails.

@ Tumbleweed....brother from another Hubber lol! Thats the Coffeeberry menu...awesome food and owned by a MUCH better than weekend warrior XCO rider :)

@ Skandalis ... cool. Just remember that some of those trails are on the "outback" section and may not be as well cleared as the marked routes. Will try get out there but its at the bottom of the priority list as the XCO and 30km routes are more popular. I know that Gauntlet is open (and should be a lot more fun that when it was raining during the last Enduro) but treat it with caution. Bat outta Hell needs some tweeks so take it slow on your first run.

Heading to Karkloof in 20min to get some last minute trail maint. done

Then off to Cascades later ...

Will post a few pics of progress and what its looking like so far

Its 3 minutes away from the race venue

i can take you okes for a spin around the SS Sa champs course, or we can head out to karkloof for the 30k loop

Would definitely join in for a 30k loop! Keep us posted please Stretch.

@Stretch, is Karkloof Rocky Lodge a good place to stay? Or is it to far or any reason I should look for something else? They are the first to reply that they still have space seem most places are booked!

@enjoi..

If its close to Karkloof Canopy Tours then its about 20km to Howick . Howick to Cascades is about 25km. Work on approx 45min to get from the Lodge to Cascades.

I know the area but honestly haven't been to the Lodge before. The photos on the webpage do look nice though.

What tweaks are you referring to?

Hey Griffin,

Its about 2km from Karkloof Canopy tours. Yeah the webpage does look cool! Thanks, the distance will be ok as I have to compromise to accommodate the Missus and her Midlands miander shopping while I enjoi the Worlds best.

and to get to the meander proper you take a district road signposted "currys post" just near the karkloof country club. Its about 15ks on that road to get to the currys post tar road

Stay easy would be ideal but it is fully booked.

I have booked at Golden Horse. Has anyone stayed there before or know if it is any good?

a couple of mates stayed there for a school reunion last year and they didnt complain...My guess would be that it is overpriced for what you get (i.e. basically a room in a casino). The only disadvantage is that it is on the other side of town. make sure you use the freeway to get to cascades

Exactamundo Stretchy :)

Best part is that the district rd basically takes you straight through the middle of some of the best singletrack Karkloof has :) Make sure you turn left and go up Khyber pass though...otherwise you heading up Lebanon pass and into the farmlands lol. Khyber is about 9km/10km in (if you cross over a low level bridge, you gone too far!) Khyber is not signposted but there is a plaque at the bottom commemorating the first glided flight in history...apparently even before the Wright Brothers.

If you go up Khyber, be onthe lookout for riders crossing the road...we tend to come out of the singletrack pretty quick ;) Also, about half way up, look to your right and if you in the right spot you will be able to see the Gauntlet

Once you get to the Curries Post Rd (easy to ID cause its tar). you can turn left to go to Curries Post (great coffee at Terbedore) or go right and you will come out at Mount West (also known as Stonehaven). From there its not far to Nottingham Rd. You could then carry on with the R103 which will take you back to Howick. Along the R103 you will find the Bierfassel (German food and BEER), Rawdons (more BEER!), Born in Africa (Shoes...for the ..umm...non cyclist), The Mandela Monument, Belgian Chocolate Factory (yum!) and LOTS of others.
