Equivalent to XX1 for road bikes??

Thinking of building up a run-around road bike with single blade front and 6,7 or 8 gear cassette. Anyone who has done this? Do you need to use a track crank or are there alternatives?

Put an MTB cassette and derailleur on, drop the big chainring and you should be good

Actually keep the big chainring and an 11-36 (or 11-34) and you'll have most of the gear spread you had before (top end and low end)
