Neg Posted September 22, 2013 Share ok so the build is coming allong on the XTC..... what i want to ask is that when i put the headset in, the bearings were loose and spacers everywhere etc... i tried to figure out where they went and it seems i have placed them correctly as there is no movement... except for the fact that the steering is very tight/stiff. it does not swing freely when i move the bike. i physically have to move the steering if i want it to swing, there is also a rough sound when it swings, like two spacers rubbing against each other? When i put the bearings in i cleaned the head tube very well, each bearing was wiped down and new grease was put in there was/is NO dirt in the head set. but yet it feels like it binding somewhere? so my actual question is- does one get a sealed headset that simply replaces whats in there with no loose bearings and seals etc.....?? Just top and bottom, maybe a new crown racer and job done! no messy grease as its all in the sealed headset?
King_Crispy Posted September 22, 2013 Share You might have the wrong crown, or not have tge spacer/washer on the top.Anyways, take it to your lbs and ask him to show you. Kinda like teaching the guy to fish instead of giving him a fish

Guest Posted September 22, 2013 Share I have replaced my headset open type bearing with a sealed bearing. It can be done done. Not sure of this if you have a tapered headset though. The sealed bearing is much easier as there are no inner race outer race and little bits to go missing. Also mine have lasted much longer as dirt and water dont affect the sealed bearing as much. Check bike radar online if they dont have a bearing change manual.
