How to convert semi-open gear cable to fully enclosed (MTB)

I hear you, but most warranties explicitly state you are not allowed to alter the frame in any way....you accept these terms when you buy the bike....

Before you start drilling, filing and so forth. Would it not be worth it looking at something like the Nokon/Jagwire housing. It seems like the liner comes separate and might fit all the way through from you shifter to the derailleur. Then you just build your bling housing as long as you need with the small little "end caps". I am not sure if the liner will fit through the lugs, but worth some research before modifying your frame.

Plain cable ties are *** and will damage your paintwork but if you don't want to lose your warranty there is a neater method using a cable tie and a plastic gear cable ferrule.

 

Basically, cut the closed end off the ferrule and insert the cable tie through it, loop over the gear cable and back through the ferrule. Obviously close the cable tie after going through the lug on the frame. I will post a pic of it later if anyone is interested...

With jagwire you get a couple ferules that have a roughly 2cm rubber outer attached which slides through the lug in the frame. the plastic outer then slides over this which stops dirt etc getting into the cabling.

I have the same setup on my XC bike as you described. I have "sealed up" my system using that method.

 

However it seems like the liner you get with the "link" ones is a one piece liner that could run all the way through to you derailleurs. This ensures that the cable is in a one piece sealed liner. The housing then gets added to it.

Ok. So hear is my solution. Go to your lbs and ask for this post-40232-1386782817,2762.jpg

Then using this part post-40232-1386782762,0448.jpg

Cut the little tab of the end.

Then get your self some shimano hydraulic cable (it is expensive so see if you can find some leftover after the brake lines have been shortened).

Then place the cap over the gear outer as normal and then push the little tail of the cap in to the hydraulic cable it is a very tight fit so some twisting is needed.

Then cut the hydraulic cable ot the required length and repeat the gear cap on the other end and there we go fully sealed outer.
