Commuting from Centurion to Allandale Road

Hi Everyone

 

Our offices have recently moved to the new Waterfall development just off Allandale offramp in Midrand.

 

The nicest part is that there are showers and locker rooms available at the new building so I am thinking of commuting to the office once or twice a week.

 

I stay in Centurion (Highveld area) so 95% of the route will be old Jhb road. I ride on old Jhb a lot but always between Nellmapius and Voortrekker monument, I have never done it in the other direction.

 

Anyone knows how the route will look from Nellmapius to Allandale? I will be taking my mtb and for safety concerns would like to minimise tar travelling to the very least.

 

I will commute with a work colleague but is there anyone doing this stretch of old Jhb regularly and alone?

 

Any advice would be appreciated. I have always wanted to commute and this is the perfect chance, I am just concerned about safety a bit.

I am going to shamelessly bump my own post.....I cannot and will not accept that there is a question that no one on the hub has the answer to! :-)

I have gone on Old Jhb Road between Allandale and Brakfontein a few times. There are some stretches between Brakfontein and New Road where you can ride off the road, in fact you almost have no choice if you value your life, but it is unpleasantly bumpy in places. And you never know what the taxi's will do. Personally, because of the latter, I would not recommend it, especially since you will always be travelling in the same direction as the rush hour traffic. Maybe try it once and judge for yourself?

Thanks, I am planning to check the route out this coming weekend unless I get a couple of hubbers telling me its a bad bad idea......safety concerns are traffic as well as potential muggings!

 

I did the stretch between Voortrekker monument and Nellmapius again yesterday and there is a very nice single track/jeep track going all the way but the grass has really overgrown quite a bit after all the rain so visibility is a bit of an issue.

Only saw this thread now but support RooiWillie. That would be the route I would use.

20 km is a nice commuting distance. It should take you about 40 - 60 mins depending on your strength and you propably will get to work faster than with a car.

Have you tried this route to Allandale yet?

I also live in Highveld, and work just off New road, 16th road.

 

I know that from Nelmapius, you can take Midstream drive all the way to Midstream estate, then turn right up Brakfontien, and skip a lot of Old Jhb road.

Just past Olifantsfontien, you can turn right again, and go up 16th road, also skipping another few km's of Old Jhb.

I haven't tried it yet, but would like to try and commute to work once or twice a week.
