Grabs your attention doesn't it?

That is what could easily be the next topic here on the hub.

On may to work this morning and still dark outside I counted 7 cyclists with no lights on their bikes. Some even ignoring a very nice cycling path and riding on a very dicey stretch of road shared by trucks and cars.

If they get knocked over who is to blame? We all then start to rant and rave about motorists and the way they drive.

If you can afford the bike surely you can afford a light. If not wait until the sun is shining then go and train.

Ride in the dark with no lights and get knocked over or possibly even killed is not going to get you any sympathy from me. You deserved it.

Of all the many accidents involving recreational cyclists I have heard about, never has it been a case of "the cyclist swerved in front of me" or "it was dark and he/she had no light". As far as I recall most accidents are caused by the driver.

I am not saying it is ok for cyclists to ride badly, I am saying that most accidents are like Burry`s where he did nothing wrong. Motorists don`t drive badly because cyclists cycle badly, they just think of cyclists negatively but I do not think this is an factor in most accidents.

I got me a 1200 lumens light in front and battery back for night rides, didn't use it once for a night ride, but it flashes on my bike whole day when I ride. I experienced that you get a bit more attention, especially if you come up from the side, it hits the mirrors nicely.

Was having these exact thoughts this morning when I left for work at just before 6. Counted multiple riders on Visserhok Rd in Durbanville without any lights - frighteningly irresponsible.
