Issues on Easton M1 rear hub

Good day Forum,

Not sure how many people out there sporting an Easton wheel set, that uses the M1 rear hub.

I have been experiencing some issues with mine in terms of bearing durability, hub loosening itself etc etc

I purchased my wheels (Easton Haven) in July 2013 from CRC, and bearings were replaced at my cost in oct/nov of 2013

In Jan 2014 after 3 months Easton agent replaced the bearings (incl 'upgrade' + shims) as there has been fix released by Easton, that was suppost to prevent bearings to seize and and increase their life expectancy

I'm now again sitting with a seized bearing, and the actual hub has untightened itself again. This brings total of new bearings, in under a year, to 3 sets.

Release from Easton: http://www.eastoncycling.com/en-gb/road/news/easton-announces-bearing-spacer-upgrade-kit-for-m1-mountain-bike-hubs/

Anybody out there with same issues?

Final resolution?

Waiting for some feedback, thanks guys!

I had what I suspect is the same model set as you, also bought from CRC. They cleared stock so I got a 2011 set (didn't realise this at the time) which has the rear M120 hub, as opposed to the newer M121. This turned out to be a crucial difference for me, as the M120 couldn't be converted to thru-axle, nor could it accept the upgraded preload cone which threads in the opposite direction.

I too had constantly loose bearings, and the freehub consistently slipped. The mechanic who rebuilt it said it looked in "terrible condition", even though I only rode it for about 750km and not once in wet conditions...

Great rims and build, terrible hubs. I since got rid of them by selling them as part of a bike, and got these instead: http://www.evobikes.co.za/wheels/wheelsets-mtb/novatec-flowtrail-29-wheelset.html

Well nothing much has changed, I have the newer set which can be converted to thru-axle or QR, by means of replacing the end caps.Bearing services on my hub lasts more or less the same as you, 500-750km apart.

Freewheel body was buggered after a mere 500km.

My options are limited, and I'd like to keep this wheelset for perhaps races only.

Luckly for me I have a set of 'old' XT hubbed Alexrims which gave me no problems...

High-end parts, high-end maintenance apparently...

I don't think that's generally the case, it's unfortunately just these I reckon...

The Novatecs weigh 50g more, the build quality is really good, and the freehub sounds incredible (think Chris King). I've hammered them much more harshly over 500km and they are still good as new.

give me call, I have a lot of experience with these hubs, done a lot of work on them and after a lot of frustration, I eventually have mastered the art of getting them to run well and last with the bearings..

will pm you my number

Unfortunately have the same issue!

Done the upgrade, by Easton and no good...

Kingalton hooked me up with a manual on how to fix your hub with this kit, I will however take it a step further and source my bearings from BMG (SS or Ceramic dunno yet)

Damnit, I thought it would sort the issue!

Where didyou get the kit, as Omnico wants me to send them the wheel

Unfortunately my LBS sent the wheels to Omnico for the job, they not so keen on releasing those kits to the LBS's and the public.

Mine are going back again after this long weekend...

Same issue, still got the M120 hub, but sort it out with a small o-ring (Between end-cap and tightening nut) and a little bit of medium strength loctite (On tightening nut, be careful thou, not to mix with grease!!). This works for me, some people might say it`s not good practice.

Same hub en 2nd set of off-the-self bearings for the last 4 years, doing about 400kms per month on the bike. Check them every 1000kms or so, to make sure not too tight or loose.

Not the best designed hubs I must concur.

DIY: Bearings needed from any bearing shop is MR17287-2RS and 6803-2RS on the Easton Havens. Busy getting myself some Hybrid Ceramic Bearings.

Just my 2c on the ceramic bearings, the eastons don't seem to seal very well and dirt and water will get in, rather buy 5 cheap replacement bearings from a bearing shop and keep as spare, will be a lot cheaper.. the ceramics wont last much longer than the normal bearings..

another thing I do is before pressing the new bearings in, rub a very small amount of water repelling grease on the bearing casings, then wipe them to remove any excess grease, it will prevent water getting in to the bearing casing, I have done this with mine and they have lasted MUCH longer..

As Martin said, Novatec for the win, build one into a Haven after having the same issues as you, its now done more than 2000km without the need to even tighten the hub. A full wheel build with one will be around R1600.
