2014 Giba Gravity Enduro - 12th July 2014

That is more or less correct.

Stage 3 will remain a mystery trail, to be relieved on the day. Should keep things interesting.

The order of the trails will not be fixed. With the exception of Stage 5, which has to be done last. So you can ride Stages 1 to 4 in any order, and then finish with Stage 5.

Stage 6 will be Burgers and draft. This is not a timed stage, although maybe we should make it one???

Can we start with stage 6?

Super keen for this

It'll be a first for me, and I'm hoping to still have all my teeth in my mouth at the end of the day

But I'm a bit worried about slowing down the faster guys. How do the organisers avoid this?

Don't worry about that, Just take out your brake pads at the top of each stage, you wont slow anyone down...

There is no order to who heads down the trail first or the gap between riders so before who head off make sure there is enough of a gap between you and the guy in front of you to not get held up, If everyone applies this principal there should be no hold ups, if someone leaves straight after you I suppose thats their problem if they get held up

Depends which timing system they use. At the recent Karkloof Enduro I was told we couldn't have more than a minute gap which resulted in me catching 4 guys on the way down 'Bat Outta Hell'. This was only an issue on that first stage though as the field spreads out and queues are less for subsequent stages.

At previous races at Cascades with a different timing system we could go whenever we wanted.

The actual timing is 30 second intervals, the ladies and kids get 1 minute.

For Giba?

At KK, the timer gave me a minute.

Giba should be the same, the timer also uses his own discretion and looks at the person and bike, not always the best way but that's what we as humans do. We rate things on face value. I joked with the timer at the top of bat outa hell and said can I get a minute and he laughed at me and said YOU get 30 second gap only.

Eish 30 seconds is close

Yea tell me about it you had to pedal your butt off to make sure you stay ahead. That is quite a rush riding at a pace down gnarly section you would normally take a chill over. But that makes you faster and better over technical.

What made it worse was that the helicopter decided to follow me quite closely. I think because I was out of position amongst the back markers - so it looked like I was really fast - and I was wearing an orange helmet with bright green shirt. Every time I caught someone I shouted like crazy but they still couldn't hear me. Had to make some risky passing moves. Haha. Result was 5 seconds of footage of me on SSport coverage rather than one of the top guys.

3:13 ;)

I've never had a problem with the timers not giving me extra time if the guy in front of me looks considerably slower...

I always try chat to guy in front of me and behind me, just to get a feel if we can expect to meet on the run, that way you're a bit more prepared if any passing needs to happen...

Thanks for the link, I ended up spotting myself in there as well.

Yeah I'm no downhill demon, and really don't care about my own time, but I also don't want to hold up other guys who want to give it a blast

I want to enjoy the sick trails, and have fun.

Same goes for my buddy who is joining me.

He did it last year, only 3 months after starting to cycle and thought it was crazy. I convinced him to do it again this year after gaining some more experience.

If anything its a lil personal competition between ourselves

Counting down the hours.

For this event, we will aim at a 30 second gap, but if you feel the need, can ask for a 1 min gap.

One of the reasons for forcing guys into 30 second gaps is to get all the riders through the trails before night fall.

200 riders at 1min intervals is over 3 three hours, and that is just one stage.

To alleviate this, we are opening up stage 1 to 4 to be ridden in any order, so there should not be too much congestion at any one stage. This is not fool proof, as a bunch of riders could all end up at the same stage at the same time but should help.

Please talk to the riders in front and behind you, and try to cede yourselves as best you can. It it not a perfect system, but seems to work.

Please do not assume that just because you are a guy that you are faster than all girls or a young kids. Plenty of guys with expensive bikes and flashy kit hold up girls and kids on trails.

Talk to the timing guys, they will be instructed to use their discretion, but they have also been instructed to get everybody down the hill in good time. The general guideline will be between 30 sec and 1 min.

Most of the stages are not too long, so unless their is a big difference in skill level, a 1 min gap should be plenty.

Most importantly, if there is someone faster behind you let them pass as soon as you are able to do so but don't go off "Great fall my china" just to let someone get past.

If we all just have bit of courtesy for the riders around us we should all be happy and have an awesome day on the bike.

Whatever. I've trained for months and I totally intend to beat Sabine this time.
