How to determine Bike value for insurance

every Jan/Feb i go to my LBS and get the price for the new model or new replacement (sometimes, like this year, its a mopdel up as they dont import my specific model anymore) i then just go online and increase my insurance by that amount. lathis year with the dollar i had to increase it by R8000! just costing me R50 more a month.

 

i bought my bike 2nd hand. i asked insurer (miway) if they want the quote or price paid, and they said no, all they want is make model serial nr, and how much i want to insure.

I looked into a tracking device for bikes, biggest issue is battery life, the idea is sound and would create a way to track at least a few of the parts if they strip it, a better option would be if the component manufacturers create a tracker crankset with a small dynamo and a rechargeable battery in that.

 

DataDot (Impregnate DNA) like they do for cars could also be a good idea. Won't track a bike, but could be good if police raid or confiscate bikes, they could be traced back to the owner (Theft/Hijacking case).

Could have put Ad together a lot better but the concept and price is decent IF it works...
