Just to make sure:"Herewith details for the upcoming 400km event for CPT to start at 00:01 – the first minute of Saturday 8th November 2014 from Vrede wines."

So that's a realllly early start...wow, Dane, are you doing with, I need to slip someone otherwise I'm not going to make it...

Naah - I've just got a short 180km ride planned, but I was looking at the dates for next year ;)

Will we be allowed to wheelsuck? I have not done any training for the event but looks fun, wonder if I should try the 400km the weekend.

Wheel sucking is very much allowed - it's not a TT/ non drafting event. You may be expected to buy coffee/beer/food at the next control though to pay for the privilege!

Full Audax ruels are up on the Audax SA site:

www.audaxsa.co.za

The main one is no outside assistance between control points (does also sadly mean that friends who aren't doing the full event can't ride alongside for part of it).

Looks like we will have safety car cover for opening and closing sections for this one which is a nice bonus. We'll definitely have a slow-ish group (i.e. me) - think we have a few faster riders also for this one too.

Yep, correct. The final cutoff time is 26h40mins (minimum Audax speed is 15kmh). Of course most are faster than this, but it's an elapsed time remember - the clock doesn't stop if we take breaks for lunch or get mechanicals out in the middle of nowhere.

Rationale behind the early start is that most of us get a chance to start and finish same day, even if it's a late finish for the full-value riders like me.

If you complete the whole set of 200k, 300km, 400km and 600km rides in 2015 - you also achieve Super Randonneur status, which is an award/medal in it's own right.

There's a roll of honour for that also on the Audax SA site. Not many each year get on there. Very much hoping to see some Cape rider's names on there for this year and next!

You found my weakness - damnit!

Now to get this past the Minister of Home Affairs.

My weakness too - and I also have a Home Affairs Minister who needs various combinations of persuasion and bribes. I can recommend YuppieChef or Spa treatments as being highly effective for shorter rides. Longer ones .... oh they can cost way more ... ;)

It starts 1 min into Saturday the 8th (midnight, the night of Fri-to-Sat). It is a starting time that accommodates a handful of compromises....

We all take turns at sucking wheels.

Most likely there will be two small groups; one going slow 'n easy (incl me), and the other one, a bit faster at med-tempo.

I expect most starters to arrive at Vrede wine farm between Fri 23h49,04 and Sat 00h00,79. Unload the bike and pack their stuff; sign-in and pay the R130.- cash (!) - [or via other method], stuff the control card and route sheet into their zip-lock bag, grunt something to fellow cyclist, have another half gallon of coffee from their own flask, start the ride, and after the first coffee stop most will slowly warm-up and become more of a Mensch again...

130 this time Peter, longer ride fee

Edit: Oh, and Hendrik being the star he is may well have coffee brewing facilities at Riebeeck Kasteel for us too fuel up before the leg onto Moorreesburg for a proper breakfast.

How do you do 600km? Is this without sleeping?

Most people will catch a short nap - faster guys get to sleep longer, those of us who are a bit slower will probably manage 3 or 4 hours max. The route has been planned around an initial 350km which takes us down to Aghulas, with then a refuel and short sleep stop probably in Struisbaai before tackling the remaining 250km home

Edit - there are some who can do it in one go without sleep. Very individual thing. I work best with either 2 or 3 hr sleeps, or 35 min cat naps if I'm really up against the clock.

Hey not fair!

These professional riders ;) should be banned.

Umm on a tablet at the moment what arw the dates for 2015?

  • 200km – 17 Jan 2015 (qualifier for 2015 PBP)
  • 300km – 21 Feb 2015 (qualifier for 2015 PBP)
  • 400km – 21 Mar 2015 (qualifier for 2015 PBP)
  • 600km – 25 Apr 2015 (qualifier for 2015 PBP)

We managed to coincide a few of these around full moons to make the dark stretches nicer. Also avoided most of the bigger road events too I think (99er, Argus etc)

Hmm 600km is the week after the 36One. I'll either be bullet proof after 36One, or broken!
