so......my house is like 170m below sea level.....

 

are there some preset co-ordinate points and altitudes that I can manually update in my unit to get the readings correct again,

Yup - read the manual.... :) you just have to find a known altitude point - I suggest you just take the unit to the beach and set it at zero - then determine the altitude at the start of your normal ride point and set that altitude. https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?30493-Setting-the-Elevation-Points-on-Edge-500

I did the beach thing but I think I set it to zero for some other co-ordinates and not where I was actually standing as that when it all went horribly wrong?

 

I see the manual says you can add an elevation point, so will try add my house and set at 17m which is roughly what it should be.
