newbie needs help

Hi guys i need help buying a mountain bike.

Been through the classifieds,saw some awesome bikes but i don't know where to start. I'm 1.83m tall weighing 134kgs.so please give some advise on second hand or new. Budget is R8k to R15k

Sorry,edited its a MTB im looking for.12km from home to work to help shake off some weight.some weekend riding. Im not really interrested in doing races for know.
