Some of the bends is a bit scary.Although a wide shoulder all the way up and down, seperated with solid yellow line, the pass is used by a lot of horse and trailer combination trucks.Sometimes they ride inside yellow lane to allow passenger vehicles to pass, and therein lies the problem, especially around blind bends. Then there is the baboons along the way, some of the males quite intimidating.

I have ridden the pass on a few occasions from Ceres to Tulbagh and back, and only early on weekend mornings.Used a 29er mtb, and the climbs is very easy, but be aware of the wind on open stretch of road towards pass from Tulbagh side.I think the whole of Cape Town's wind is manufactured there.
