Weekly totals and long sessions as per Friel's training advice

A question to those who follows/have followed Joe Friel's training advice in the Triathlete's Training Bible:

During the past two years I had a bit more time to train than now which is quite ironic as I'm now considering IM 2015. In order to make the best of what I have I used Friel's well-known book.

With my annual training hours at 550 the weekly spread works out differently than what I always thought to be good practice, namely to do in your long run and bike what you did in total through the week. In fact, in the past two years I only did 80% of my 10-day total during my long run and bike. With Friel's system however - especially in the Base 3 and Build phases - I sometimes have to do 200-300% of the weekly cycling total if I want to get long rides of 180-200km in on the weekend.

In your experience, is this meant to be like that and sustainable?

Mmmmmm... ok, let me try another formulation.

In general, how do you - on any plan/regime - decide how long your long run and/or bike is?

Bike - If the actual race distance is 100km or longer then i try do at least one ride of the same distance AND terrain (hills / metres climbed etc) or a little over the distance / metres climbed.

Run - For IM distance (42) my longest run would be 32, ideally a week after my longest ride.

Intensity for both would be LSD type effort, not faster than my goal race pace...time in the saddle  / on the feet. = money in the bank

IMO
