Me too. I can think of the roads through Midrand but it would be dangerous with all the road riding involved.

Is there a shoulder on the R101 or condition of the gravel section next to the road?

I cycle on Saturdays from Centurion to Marlboro and then up to the monument but then turn right and go to Groenkloof . From Wierdapark I take Rooihuiskraal road . This goes all the way to Woodmead drive now , I then go towards the shopping centre , cross the N1 and then return on old JHB road that goes aaallll the way to the monument . But I am sure it would be easy to get to woodmead from the spruit and then you can pick up Rooihuiskraal . I am not sure what it's called where it joins Woodmead but you go past the old 94.7 venue on that road . All off-road or on the pavemunt at least and not a lot of roads to cross . If you choose to go up old JHB then off road on wrong side of the road up to new road . Then you can pick up the awesome single track on the left side against the concrete wall . Haven't seen any suspects thus far on this ride . If on Saturday we can connect at Woodmead on my return trip .

I would love to join but am recovering from neck surgery so am off the bike until December :( Perhaps after that

Thanks for the info. Approx. what time do you end up at Woodmead?

At about 8am . I don't go very fast , it is a TITS ride and I do stop for a smoke sometimes .

Gunston or Boxxer? Need to be at the Monument at around 10am. From Woodmead is should be under 40km?

Yip about 50   40 km with close to 900m uphill . 8am to 10am   ,  you will be pushed for time . That last bit on old JHB up to the monument can bite .

One can always try. It is a family event at the Monument. Not sure if the wifes broom turbo will kick in if I am late

So did you do the trip to the Hoogte ?

Yes, with some serious wind training. The Cape Doctor made an appearance in JHB on Saturday. From N1 up Witkoppen, right onto main, left at Kayalami crossing, right at Olifantsfontein, left on R101 al the way to the monument. Most of gravel next to the tar allows for good/safe riding. Moving time around 2:40hrs and around 56km, with a few short sections on tar. The left hand section of the R101 allows for good riding. Could be a nice  > 100km TITS return ride. How was your ride?

Sounds like a great base-type ride - how safe is it from a security point of view? Were there any dodgy sections?

 Yip wind was a killer . Came around Maxwell drive then pass Woodmead centre over N1 and hooked up with the Old JHB road all the way up to Monument against that wind . Past the gate at monument at 09:50 . Thought it would give me more KM but only managed to get 80km out .

I left Centurion at about 6am for Woodmead , lots of joggers but not a lot of cars of anything else around . I think this section up to Maxwell and then onto Woodmead drive looks fairly safe . No bushes etc and a big dirt shoulder with mostly pedestrian single tracks next to the road . Crossing over from Woodmead to Old JHB also seem/felt safe even though I shot through the "taxi rank"at the Woodmead/N1 intersection . Was on the Old JHB road at about 8am and again not a lot of pedestrians walking although lotsa cars . The first bit up old JHB I found the left hand side to have the most dirt and then at the bottom of the hill at a robot I cut over to the right as they got road works on the left . Then I stuck to the right all the way past the mosque up to New Road . There you will find nice Single track between the office park and the Old JHB road . Currently very open because all has been burned down but I think once the grass gets taller I would rather stick closer to the main road . Once you cross N1 again at Brakfontein there are a few nice pieces of single track up on the ridge on the left . This goes all the way through to Ruimte , do not enter the single track after Ruimte , it goes down to the spruit and are a well known hot spot . Rather cross the robot at Ruimte and Old JHB and continue on the Swartkops golf side , this also ensure that you can cross the bridge safely . On Left there's not really space to cross the bridge safely . From here you can stay on right all the way up to the Valhalla robot , where I normally cross over to the other side . I don't think I will do this in the week as I imagine there must be a lot of commuters along the way . For security reasons I don't like returning the same way that I came therefor I would suggest returning on the other side of the highway .
