The Spruit's segment leaderboards (especially the flowy lines with jumps) are riddled with the names of side-riders.

You mean like The Lower Bundaberg Berms? Is that one? Because I am getting tantalizingly close to something special there. :D But if other okes are doing it with jumps while I'm just sprinting for all I'm worth then they can go to hell. Nomesayin'? :P

Exactly.

Another one where it is very evident is the "Do you even lift (your wheels) bro?" segment, near the virgin active with the log gap jump over the ditch.

The creator of this segment is also one of the jump builders and as you can tell from the name the segment was meant to be run as jump/play line. Not just bombed down the regular path (or even road as some of the top 10 did).

In fact out of the top 12, only 3 actually rode the line.

So yeah, any use of Strava to create a seeding booster track will have to be closely monitored and the course carefully designed.

EDIT: I'm tempted to go for the KOM there... I'm only 1sec off... but hitting those jumps any faster than I already am is probably not smart. Maybe I should just flag the KOM as he definitely didn't ride the jumps :whistling:

Great idea.

Could use the Hakahana Enduro lines as a few of the selected segments.

There are a couple of sections at Van Gaalens like Oom Piet etc

Thaba and Rietvlei.

:D Well good on ya, man! Think I need to park off there sometime and check how the pros tackle that log gap.

On Bundaberg there are a couple of small hops and dips but I always wondered if some of the top times did on the rightmost line near the palisade because if so, damn, respect. I have no idea how those times could be achieved with airtime plus putting the power down again. For me, it's just one of those ones where I love to get fast and loose.

I agree that the strava-aided seeding would be a good idea and have thought about it before but always thought I'd be shot down hard for suggesting it.

How badly do you want to do the log jump??

I got a guy to do it last week, he was on a 29er with clips and all. I have a secret ingredient ^_^

What's that "I dare you" it always works .

well that works too! Nothing like a dare and some spectators...

but a safety bridge for those wanting to learn helps too.

I'm in JHB this weekend. You don't by any chance have a Tracer 650b that might like a little company?

hahaha! you're welcome to use it... but no... not for sale. I built it up for my little brother to try get him into riding.

Cool. I had to ask. They are incredibly rare. If you do decide to let her go keep me in mind. Can we hook up a Morz Reunion on Sunday? Nothing too hectic. I suck at jumping as you have witnessed in person.

29er with clips and all you say? Check and...check. Now, about this secret ingredient...

My problem with the Strava idea is that it is extremely easy to manipulate your times electronically on sections. I can see a lot of cheating and most of it wont be traceable.

I also think we are over-estimating how many people actually log their rides on strava etc.

My take on seeding & mass participation events is that no seeding system in this world will avoid bottlenecks at mass participation events, it really only takes one or 2 riders dismounting in a narrow passage and voila you have a bottleneck.

You either take your sense of humour along to the event or work the existing seeding system to get an early start (no sympathy for the "I'm really talented but don't do races so my seeding is bad" brigade from me.)

Fair enough. This was my first event so no complaints from me. I was actually thinking that next year I would use the JUMA to drag out my mates whose bikes live under cobwebs most of the time and they can use the bottlenecks to recover. I can't help but think though, that GPS-based tracking for ranking/seeding surely will come into play at some point in the future, whether it be strava or otherwise. Perhaps needs to be more refined and secure first.

That would be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath... Currently we can't even get different seeding organisers to do something simple like share their results
