Sp!ke Posted October 28, 2014 Share Hi all I'm seriously considering commuting on my MTB, once or twice a week, from Harties through to the Arcadia side of Pretoria. A couple of questions come to mind: Does anyone commute from Harties to Pretoria? Is riding on the N4 a problem? I see there are signs everywhere saying no cycling. Cheers

BarHugger Posted October 28, 2014 Share Can you pack an UZZI.....? If not, don't do it. We can start with the T-category..........traffic, taxis, truck and trailers, tar, township-terrorists, turds, time, thorns, threats, tempting-target, trenches, typhoid and maybe turtles. The Guy in Pink Posted October 28, 2014 Share Is riding on the N4 a problem? I see there are signs everywhere saying no cycling.. Nah, should be no problem. Had a teammate Wolfgang who did his training at night, so the used the M1 Motorway through Johannesburg as it had the best lighting of any road around. One night Blue lights and Wheee- Whoorr! Speedy: You are not allowed to ride on the Motorway, Go off at the next off-ramp! I will follow you." Woofie: " I am three weeks from Germany out. If I don't go off at Jan Smuts I am loost" He was escorted to Jan Smuts where he usually got off.
Pants Boy Posted October 28, 2014 Share Oh yah, signs that says no cycling - ignore them and cycle there, they're useless in any case In case you're wondering, that's SARCASM.

Sarcasm...lowest form of...? The reason I ask is that on weekends you see loads of people cycling on the N4 which is probably the least used stretch of highway in the country. Closer to 94.7 it becomes common to see groups out training. What I was hoping for was commentary (albeit with the usual Hub sarcasm) from one of those who cycle the route. WF Nkomo (previously Church) str runs parallel to the N4 the whole way but it's dangerous. I would rather risk whatever wrath would come with using the toll road than looking at using that. Then some advice on possible 'safe' routes to the area of the Union Buildings as the main drag is absolute taxi hell. CogitoErgoSum Posted October 29, 2014 Share Yeah, that stretch of the N4 is a bit dodgy going past the Kalafong/Attridgeville/Danville... Why not come back across Zilkaats towards Brits and get on the N4 there. Go then up to either Pta North offramp and cross over Wonderboom nek, or Dr Swanepoel offramp. There are plenty guys training on there at times. Although, there are no cycling signage.
