Save up and buy the frame/bike you want. Money spent on a bike is money well spent!!

Too many of us spend money on stuff that dont make us happy. Going for the 'sport' option on your car or paying a massive bond on a house for the maximum value that the bank will lend you etc...

One day when you look back at all your expenses over your working career the R12k that you mentioned now will be long forgotton, yet if you spend that money on a bike you will remember 100's of awesome rides for the rest of your life!

A friend bought a new 2012 Antem X1 29er (in 2012) and loves the bike. Haven't had any problems (even though his a large heavy bloke). Only thing he complained about was the expense of the brake pads (Avids Elexir 5).

I've heard that the Giant Frames lifetime warranty only applies on the new frames if an authorized dealer built up the new frame (so there may be an assembly fee to consider if you go for the frame only option).

Why not buy a new Anthem 29er of lower spec than your XTC and swapping the best parts to the Anthem and selling your XTC as a complete bike even though it will have lower spec (but brand new) components.

I have found that the Specialized DS bikes are very well priced. I also like Silverback because the stick to the Shimano Components (meaning they have Shimano brakes where most of the other brands like fitting the Avid's which have more expensive brake pads).

Not sure of your budget, but I bought a new 2014 AnthemX 29er frame through my LBS who then did the build over from my HT at no extra charge. Only had to buy a seatpost.  Frame including shock R10500

I guess this will be the best option. Will pop by my LBS and ask about prices, also keeping an eye out for Durbanville Giant's opening specials...
