Loading Routes onto a Garmin

I was wondering if anyone could explain how to get a .gxp into a Garmin to use that route when riding? 

 

Is there a repository where one can get routes for most of the popular MTB rides for the country?

I've used www.mapmyride.com a few times. Works well.

You can download gpx files from there, convert to tcx file and upload - I found that works best.

You'll have to do some googling depending on your gps model to check how to exactly upload.

I've found Basecamp an excellent download. Once it is installed you can download the GPX map onto it and from there upload it to your Garmin. You can even see the profile of the ride if you want. Really simple.
