hi all

so i want to convert 3x10 to 2x10

current ratio on front chainrings are 42,32,24

with a 11-36 cassette

what chainrings must I buy to keep a similar ratio as current setup would be?

all this is shimano xt if it makes a difference....

keep 42.

Ditch the 32 and 24

and fit a 30

oh and h.t.f.u.

Nothing is going to be similar...

38/26 is close I suppose but with a 36 cassette you are very low geared with that 24... do you really need such a granny?

26,27.5 or 29?

Most 2 x 10 these days are 24 x 36 and the older type was 26x39

So the 24(front) x 36(back will be the same as your current setup for climbing but you loose a little on the top end.

If you are strong on the climbs and light weight then consider 26 for the small blade front and 39 for the big.

Very few people in and around Cape Town run 42 on the big ring front so it is 26 x 39 front with 11-36 back

What size wheels?

11% diff between 26 and 29 is reason why I'm asking.

26 inch

42,32,24 is average spread for 3x system on 26.

I ride 3x9 44,32,22 on my old 26er with 11-36 cassette. On local trails I use only the big ring but in Lesotho that 22 granny gets a bit of action! On my 2x10 29er I ride 38, 26. Top speed about the same but granny is harder.

If you are not riding a lot of road then you can afford to reduce your big ring to around the 36 - 40 range on a 26er with 2x10 and 24 small ring. The guys saying 30, 32 are probably on bigger wheels.

For a 1x10 maybe go 34.

Depends what you ride and whether you prefer to spin or push

Daaaamn man... 36 Cassette is plenty low enough on a 26er with 26/38 all the way.

You have also not said which trails you ride or what kind of riding you do...

I think you will be best served by the 26/38 either way. Besides why do you want to change to 2x if you want the same gears? either you don't really use the very top end so much or the very bottom end... and if you do keep the 3x and don't waste money

Sorry should have been more specific

For my wife

she is a spinner no push ie like to spin gears not very strong climber but a fast and I mean fast descender

mainly technical marathons

Bike is a morEwood zula

some... yes but sometimes you can make do.

Middle Ring should be able to go to all rear gears and top to the last ones (smallest) so with that said you can trim your der's to make it work.

Sometimes there is some spacers behind the BB that can be removed or move to the other side to also help however if the crank is nice and centered etc don't play with this.

Like I said before - are you sure it is worth it???

Otherwise buy a 2x crank.

apparently you cant convert a 3x10 to 2x10 because the chain rings wont line up like they should on a 2x10 crack??

any truth in this?

I once had a bike that had a ten speed tripple crank converted to double with bash gaurd. The cassette was 8 speed. The chain was 9 speed. The front deraileur was limited so the shifter couldn't change to the non existent big ring. It worked flawlessly for months

The only golden rule to be aware (to my limited knowledge)

Is that your rear deraileur and rear shifter must match.

shimano shimano. sram sram. Everything else is pretty much doable.
