Pretty much the same,

Merida has a better Rear Derailleur, whereas the axis has better brakes. Only fractional.

Comes down to personal preference and feel on the bike. I would go for the Merida, but I'm biased. Also, resale value on Merida might be higher than on the Axis (IMHO).

Teenagers are mostly very brand concious. Based on that alone I would buy the Merida.  Also in this case, I feel its a better bike overall, Merida make quality frames.

Thanks - are the fork and tyres not higher spec on the Axis?

The Fork on both the bikes you originally posted are the same, accept the Axis has remote lockout. Which makes it more convenient, but not "Higher Spec". The Fork on the A20 in the link I posted is however MUCH better.

Can't comment on the tyres/wheels
