Tubeless conversion

Hi,

I am new to mtb would like to do a tubeless conversion.  I have a couple of questions and hope somebody can help.

I am currently running Schwalbe rims with Rapid Rob tires that came with bike (Giant Talon 29er 2014).  I understand that I have to get tubeless tires but do I need to also change the rims?  Can I convert these if I get the right tires?

In terms of tires I'm looking for something that won't break the bank but that will last.  I mostly ride the Tygerberg trails (Contermans, Hoogekraal, Meerendal, etc).  Any recommendations?  As I'm purely a recreational rider I'm not that concerned about weight and more about durability and all around reliability.

Thank you in advance and apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Hi NewKoos :)

Seeing as you are a newbie, I'm inclined to recommend you ask your LBS to do the conversion for you.

Some rims can be converted with tape only, others require a special rim strip or modified (cut) tube. There are a number of Rapid Rob variations. As long as yours are not the wire bead type, it should be possible to convert them. If the Rapids are the very light weight version, it could take a lot of patience and sealant to get them sealed properly.

Tubeless conversion is a service any good LBS does for relatively little money. It is well worth the investment. The only expensive part is if you have to replace the tyres. In that case, it is best to opt for the Snakeskin versions (if you stick with Schwalbe).

Hope that helps.

Maxxis Crossmark or Ardent (LUST version) will last you a long time. They aren't the cheapest on the market, but they will last you twice as long as many other tyres of the same price range.

Your LBS might be more inclined to do a free tubeless conversion if you buy the tyres from them ;)

Thank you for the replies.  Appreciated.

Best place to buy tires (in terms of price)?
