Anthem / Trance Overdrive

This may be very obvious but what for do I need to look for to replace a fork on a Giant Anthem X1(26er L) with overdrive head tube?

I've done a lot of looking but I'm still none the wiser about straight vs tapered and steerer height when in tandem with the overdrive head tube. Part of it seems that Giant were trying to create their own standard but that was abandoned with the new models.

What I'm left with is a 2011 anthem that has a very old Recon 327 in it that I want rid of. Now I know that isn't an over drive equipped steerer and I doubt it's even tapered so I'm left wondering if it's got a convertor headset and if I can look at tapered forks or should just stay with straight.

I have a feeling that the minimum length on the steerer is 195mm, but anything longer than 215mm will give you some cockpit adjustability. Is that correct or am I even off the mark with that.

Just a thought, anyone got some 26er forks (fox / rockshox / Mana's) that they want to let go? Probably 100 - 120 travel. That would be great as I'm building up a bid for my bro in law and I've just been shafted by a guy who apart from the frame sold me total basket case. Yes blame is pretty much on me, buyer-beware and all that but I'm now left trying to do a good thing and looks like I"ll be paying in for the pleasure. All good though, just need to make it a bike to be ridden not hidden.

Overdrive is the same as tapered.

Overdrive 2 is the standard that is unique to Giant. It only exists on some Giant bikes from 2012-2014.

Your 2011 Anthem could be running straight or tapered steerer, depending on spec level. The easiest way to check is look under the crown and see if the diameter of the steerer tube looks bigger at the bottom than at the top. If it is not clear, then you will have to drop the fork out to look.

Once you have established that, the rest is easy.

That makes a lot of sense. It's currently running a straight steerer and I've seen a lot of tapered ones I'm after so will need to hunt down another headset kits (?)

Sometimes when running a straight steerer fork in a tapered head tube, they use an adaptor crown race thingy that slides onto the fork and fits the oversized lower bearing. When changing to a tapered fork, you may only need the correct crown race thingy.

If it's got an OD head tube you can use either a straight or a tapered steerer, it's just the crown race that will need changing.

Should make your search a bit easier.
