This is probably best place to post this….Got a sms from a guy calling himself “ France” I have his tel nr if I need to post it.  (I only advertised here)

He wants to buy my bike without any further info or pics and immediately wants do a eft, then get a friend to pick it up as he is in the vaal.

When I phoned him  back I told him  we can meet in person, he needs to email me from a legit email address as well as post a comment “ taken” on my advert he disappeared.

Note that “France” also does not use what’s  app  and has a foreign accent. Both of these are big flags in my book. Not a single question was asked apart from I will eft when can I send a person to pick up.

If mr France is legit, sorry but the whole thing smells of scam.

I put a camera up for sale on Gumtree and the same guy phoned me with the same story. He lives in the vaal but he'll make payment now and his nephew will come and collect it the next day.

Told him that's fine but I will call him back when the money has cleared in my account and then his nephew can come collect, I've never heard back from him.

Play along and tell him to find your banking details in the attachment of your mail. You then make sure that the attachment is a photo at least 1 gig big. He will download it with money that he can ill afford to lose. They seem to disappear quickly. Should he inform you that you send a photo by mistake, apologize and send another photo.

I nearly got scammed selling my previous bike. Went as far as meeting the guy picking it up (biggest mistake ever), had to ask him to leave until the money cleared, which it never did of course.

Red Flags:

  • Has no idea what they're buying - "Nice bike" doesn't cut it.
  • Proof of payment not coming from the bank but rather a forwarded email.
  • 0-comment hubber (if a hubber at all)
  • Way too keen (leaving country tomorrow, or some crap like that)

Not so obvious flags (not always dodgy):

  • "buying for friend"
  • doesn't ask for more detail/bike history
  • "I already EFT'd you"
  • Asking where you bank, then conveniently isn't yours. (can always EFT a friend with the same bank for guaranteed instant payment)

Best and only piece of advice: No cleared money, no bike.

Great advice; at end of the day, money talks.

Hey Man

Give me the number please?

I have had a similar incident and the guy wanted to send "Frank".

He was even willing to meet up at the Police Station though...

He also agreed that he will only take the bike once the money clears on my side, which gave me some security as you can't really reverse an EFT.

hmm wonder if that's why I lost the chance at grabbing a RED groupset. Called the advertiser, said I'm not even going to try to negotiate the price as I wanted it urgently. Sent me a message a few mins later and said its sold. Damn my eager beaver attitude.
