MTB - Bearings

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had any idea what type of bearings Giant fit in their bikes and wheel sets ?

( referring to brand and bearing class, abec 3, 5 or 7 ? )

Also, if there would be any benefit in changing bearing from standard fit bearings to a better quality ?

( example from abec 3 to 5 )

Would be great to hear from first hand experience :-)

Thx.

At best they would fit ABEC 3 or equivalent.  These are the usual for bikes.  As ABEC is an American standard not all manufacturers use it.  It is not a measure of quality itself but indicates the tolerances to which the bearings are manufactured.  Some hubs are now using ABEC5 (all or some bearings in the hub).  ABEC7 would be overkill as they cost and not many suppliers stock them.  Popular with skate boarders.  I would suggest the best bearings your local supplier has for wheels (most expensive?) but if you are going to MTB in clay water all day it shouldn't matter what you use.  Suspension bearings are not going to last no matter what you use as they don't turn so all the wear is on the same part of the bearing.  You may have to replace ABEC3 more often but they are much cheaper.  "Maxed" bearings have a heavier grease so are preferred for suspensions.  Unless you buy a "big brand" bearing you won't really know what you have as there is so much re branding and licensed manufacture that the origin and quality can't be determined by the end user.
