Cycling in Madagascar

Has anyone done any cycling or cycle tours in Madagascar? Will probably go for an organised tour (laid-back holiday with all the arrangements done for us), but I am keen to hear any advice, views and opinions, etc!

When are you planning on going, and do you have a general idea of the areas?

Depending on the region, the rainy season can be near impossible to negotiate with a bike. Last time I went for a solo cycle across the island I could sometimes barely cover 5km on a day in some areas

Go on holiday and chill, leave the bike ...

WOT? No bike? Hoping to combine chilling and cycling!

check this out, sounds brilliant: http://www.redislandride.com

Sounds a bit too difficult for me: 'The event is not for the faint hearted ... The routes are technical and challenging ... ' Would love to do this at the pace of a mere mortal, middle-aged weekend warrior, but I suspect that's not what they have in mind!

I have some time in December, which seems to be just before the rainy season, or the start of it. There are two websites I've looked at and they both seem to run routes in roughly the same area - from Antananarivo down and across the island, to Ifaty:

On my bucket list.

We went to Madagascar in the dry season, and it would have been quite amazing to ride some of the places we visited. Then again, it was also pretty cool to just have a holiday and not think about bike riding - Madagascar is spectacular and quite diverse.

I did the Red Island Ride last year.  It was an incredible experience both on and off the bike.  We navigated by GPS (much easier than it sounds) and passed through some spectacular areas and town that looked unchanged for hundreds of years - almost medieval in feeling.  Organisation, hospitality, food and beer were all top class.  And cheap!

The riding is more touring oriented with one or two longish days, but with all day to complete so never a rush.  It was also not heavily technical, and where it was you just got off and walked.  We had a mix of strong riders down to one or two beginners.  Everyone managed fine and ended with smiles on their faces.

Madagascar is a different world and I can't think of a better way to do it than on a bike.  Red Island Ride with it's full service and personal touch is definitely worth considering.  They take the admin, logistics and navigation challenges out of the picture.

Do it!  Seriously.
