Hi All.

I have just moved to Durban and need to stay on the bike. Weekends are fine as there always people out.

For the week, purely for safety. which are the busiest days around the suncoast / moses loop? And does any anyone ride out to Durban north from suncoast and what is the traffic like at 5:30 am?

Route will be through riverside, across Broadway , to La Lucia mall and possibly to Umhlanga and back.

Good idea or not for the week?

The circuit is packed on Tuesdays and Thursdays - park at Moses Mabida Stadium and then ride out... be careful of the big groups, they ride hard and you will need to hold your line. The lane is dedicated to cyclists until 630 am but traffic gets nasty at about 615am. Get don there before 5am and blast until 6am. You will be tired.  With regards to riding out north, we don't have issues but there have been a few muggings on the blue lagoon bridge on the m4 highway. A group normally leaves Moses M Stadium on Saturday morning at 530am to go north (La Mercy)

Vivek B, parking is free for cyclists at Suncoast in the early mornings. Park there.

I'm a regular there. Busy this evening, but will post more detail about riding on the beach circuit in the morning.

Hi Vivek.  Welcome to Durbs-by-the-sea!  Please come and join us (East Coast Cycling Club) any Saturday or Sunday from Suncoast.  We have usually have routes from 30kms - 85kms.  We leave at 6.00am in winter, so get there 10 minutes before.  Parking is free and safe.

You are going to really enjoy the circuit.  It is a 5km lap and you will usually find a number of groups doing anything from 25 - 45kmh, so you will find one that suits you.  We start at about 5.20am on Thursdays.

Not sure where you are staying, but a of few us ride different routes from Musgrave Road on Tuesdays.  Either from Morningside to Glenwood, twice (±40kms) or to Umhlanga and back (±45kms). Pace around 28 -30kmh.

If you are looking to join a club with riders from 30kmh down to 20kmh, give me a call and I will tell you a bit more about East Coast Cycling - the friendliest club on the East Coast.

Of course, if you are a racing snake, Tombeej is your man (also a member of ECCC)

thanks for the replies guys. Did 34km [27km/hr] around the circuit and although flat it was quite a work out.

Daryl, I'm no racing snake and far from it so a club will do me good. I will get in contact with you soon.

I live in Merewent so have to drive out but don't mind doing this 4-5 times a week. I should be there tomorrow and Thursday again, push me along if you guys see me, the slow big guy on a Merida Reacto [for this week only]

That circuit will transform you, it will take your fitness to another level.

Because it's 5km of almost uninterrupted riding, it's like training on the track. You can get up to a speed and just hold it there. It's a very high quality workout. Add the wind that is always blowing down one of the straights for some excellent resistance training, and you've got top notch street training that is also relatively safe.

Tuesday and Thursday mornings are the busiest, esp. Thursday. Try and hook onto a bunch as it comes past and enjoy the thrill of riding in a group on a tight track through roundabouts, etc. Riding in the fast bunches almost becomes like criterium racing on some days.

During winter I ride there in the evenings. I only ride there in the mornings in summer to beat the heat.

See you at our next weekend club ride :). ECCC is a social club, not a racing club, so you'll always have people going at your comfortable paces on the weekend rides. Breakfast at Suncoast afterwards.

I fully agree with your comments. basically a spinning session. Need to check my Polar but I think it was about the 950calorie mark which to me is a good workout.

Thursdays may become a problem as I might start playing indoor soccer with the guys from the office, but I think this will also help boost my fitness. Just not enough time to fit in everything...

Will maybe see you guys on Saturday morning if I get my new bike in time.

We've got some serious weather coming. Might be on the IDT for the rest of the week (not sure if there's going to be a weekend ride at this stage).

yeah the wind was hauling big time this morning. Held me back by like 8km/hr on the straight from suncoast to blue lagoon.

Nah, this is a pleasant breeze compared to what's coming on Friday.

The wind will be pumping 60 - 80 km/h. And a SW wind, which means perfect barreling waves for the hardcore surfers. 5m swells coming on Friday too, and we're in the middle of spring tides at the moment.

Big swells and spring tides make for interesting times. We might have water going right up the beach and onto the promenade.

High tide is around 5:30pm on Friday. I'm going down to watch the action at the beachfront after work. I'm certain the bigwave surfers will all be out and being towed in using jetskis. It will be worth your while to go down there to watch.

That sounds interesting, photography is another hobby of mine so will get out the long lenses and get some shots.

80km winds is going to be serious

Where are going to be?  I'm think North/Bay pier or New Pier.  Gonna be awesome to watch

Daryl, I'll be at the beachfront at about 16h15. What time can you get away? Want to meet up there?

I'm also thinking of going at lunch. Low tide is at 11h20 and so the swell should be breaking on limestone reef (out in the bay off Moyos pier).

If the forecasts are correct, then it's going to be like the North Shore, Hawaii.
