Durban Hill Training

Vivek, Tombeej is the man to listen to (also an ECCC member when he slows down enough to ride with us)!

The M19 is the perfect preparation for Amashova.  However, I would also suggest Cowie's Hill to Pinetown and closer to the race we will do Hillcrest to Cato Ridge as well for one of the club rides.

The long climb up to Ballito from the Lagoon is also ideal (the guys are doing this on Saturday).

On Tuesday mornings you can Join Mark, Costa and me (and now Jonathan) when we do the Trematon Drive to Queen Mary Ave loop twice.  We start at 5:10 from Musgrave Road.

Sorry I've been so scarce, Daryl! I won't be there this weekend either - going to be out on the Freedom Trail. See you the week after.

Come join me on a Saturday morning doing repeats of the M19 climb to Pinetown :)

Do you do this on your own?  I heard it is very unsafe especially when you riding up with all the shacks.

Yip, all the time and never had a problem. And there are always other riders going up and down on the weekends as well.

There have been 2 attacks AFAIK on the M19, and rode with the one guy (he was stabbed and left on the side of the road very early one morning, but right at the top at Roger Sishi offramp heading north). But then again, I've heard of attacks elsewhere in DBN and of course everywhere in SA, but that's not going to stop me riding my bike.

Compared to a place like Gauteng or many parts of the WC urban areas, DBN is super safe. But of course there are no guarantees.

I have a far, far higher chance of being hit by a car than being mugged. That's what I worry about, and (for me) the M19 is the safest climb by far because of the huge shoulder.

Durban Hubbers - I will be in Umhlanga for the week after the Amashova. Are there any morning rides that go out during the week. Looking for a strong bunch. I will be staying near Marine Drive.

Thanks!

So I helped myself and it looks like quite a bit happens from the Suncoast Casino parking lot!

Its about a 15km ride from where I am staying to there, so will plan the trip and join the circuit or Saturday/Sunday group rides.

Looking forward to riding by the coast!

yes a lot happens from suncoast, Tuesday and Thursdays are the busiest on the circuits, but I assume every day next week will be busy. Weekend rides will go down north, I am sure you will find all the racings snakes out next Saturday for an easy spin.

As Vivek says, Tuesdays and Thursdays are the main morning sessions around the beach circuit. The course becomes reserved for cyclists from 4h00 to 6h30. Thursdays is especially fast - more like a mass criterium race. Park at Suncoast Casino (free parking for cyclists in the morning) and then ride slowly around the circuit until a fast group comes by - then jump on. Some pros there, some olympic level sprinters. You'll find a group fast enough for you.

But you can go there every morning of the week and there'll be riders going around.

I ride in the evenings. We've got a good group, esp. Tues - Wed - Thurs. Welcome to join us. I'm there from 16h30 to 18h30 most evenings.

Then for group rides on weekends, the fastest guys in your area are going to be the Tri X Multisport boys (top racing vets, elites and triathletes). They go off from the La Lucia Mall. PM me for their details, I'm sure they'll have you along for their weekend rides - great bunch of guys. Might join you if I'm in town.
