Long slow distance

WRONG!

Long STEADY distance. You can still do this fast but keep it steady. Do sprints or intervals or slacking off.

Disagree.  As far as I know you should start with base training, i.e. lots of long slow rides, and once you have the miles you start with building up your power - doing sprints or intervals.

But maybe this is an outdated theory.  Any trainers out there care to advise?

Rather focus on intensity than speed. Doing a say, 2 hour ride at a peceived exertion of fairly easy to somewhat hard and you'd be in the range for an LSD ride. Basing your progress on your speed is dangerous, unless you're using it for a time trial test. As a training tool it's meaningless as there are too many variables (wind, route, position, gradient, etc)
