Road bike suggestions

As some of you will have seen in the insurance thread, some idiot hit me while I was out on the road bike.

On the up side, only superficial injuries to me, and insurance wrote the bike off (and have already paid me out), so now it is time to start bike shopping.

The bike I was riding was a Raleigh RC7000 with a carbon fork and full Ultegra.

The frame said it was an XL, which I believe translates to 58cm.

The million dollar question is, what to buy now.

I'm not worried about the new vs second hand debate, if I can get a good deal I'm happy to look at it.

I have obviously been browsing the classifieds and there are a few options (ok, it is almost every single bike with a frame in a 58).

In no particular order:

Maybe I have been living under a rock, but I've never heard of Leggera before, but a quick Google search tells me, "Leggera Group is an international company which offers design, manufacturing and distribution of bicycles and metal fireplaces." - bikes and fireplaces seems like a rather strange combination...

Fondreist, Matrix, and the aforementioned Leggera are not names you hear every day. How easy would it be to get something resolved if you needed something from them? Do any of them have a local presence of some kind?

I have also heard from somebody I trust that he knows a third party selling a S-Works Venge in a similar price bracket but I'll only get the details on that bike tomorrow. (I am aware that if this is in good condition that it would be the best bang for my buck)

Is there actually anything new under R20,000 that is worth looking at?

I can't say I have any brand loyalty so that is not a factor.

This is the right time of the year to buy new. 2016 stock comes in and bike shops sell off 2015 stuff at bargain prices. I'm pretty sure you could pick up a new carbon framed bike for your budget. Just shop around.

Leggera is an old brand, the one advertised is probably 10 to 15 years old. The parts are Campags entry level and they no longer make them. Only the wheels have value.

Matrix is not well known and weren't big in SA. With a name like Judy, It could be a woman specific bike.

Fondreist is a top quality brand from Italy, but I find it difficult to spend R12k on an entry level bike with Tiagra parts.

If you do some searches, the was a bike shop selling Swift Attack frames new for R6 900. The last time is was advertised, they only had Xtra large left. That would give you R13 000 to build up a really nice bike. There was also a really nice carbon Raleigh for R8500 in size 56, which in their terms is an XL.

My cuz picked up a new Silverback Scalera 3, which is full carbon with 105 5800 all round for 21k. Might go a bit cheaper now
