REPLACE them with AVIDS!!

They talk to you.

But they work. (and are servicable)

More and more Shimano complaints recently.

By 'seizing' I presume you mean pads gripping the disc when there is no pressure on the lever. A better term for this is 'pumping up'. 'Seizing' is when one or more pistons gets stuck in its caliper bore.

Routing to rear often has a high point in the brake line where air can collect..if this air gets warm it expands and pads may push out to the discs. Overfilling with oil can also cause this.

All your issues seem to be when the brakes get warm from sun or actual braking. So I think you might still have air. Take caliper off the bike and hang it vertically down while bleeding.

Good as they are, XT brakes can't be rebuilt so if they are old or abused, might be a faulty lever needing replacement.

When you bleed, do it properly with the bleed blocks in place to prevent over or underfilling and follow the Shimano service instruction exactly - not some diy home video off the web with steps missed out.

I've had several sets of XT brakes and used them hard - never had this problem. Hope you get it sorted....no pun intended.

Bled them the right way, with the block, off the bike with the caliper hanging.

Looks likely that its the Lever, left it in the sun for a few minutes, it pumped up and then I covered it with a cold wet cloth and it settled back to normal.

Only 6 months from new so they will go back.

Thanks Guys - by seizing I meant the levers as initially thought it was the pistons

they did have a full bleed at my LBS

brakes are about 2 years old but never had the problem before the bleed

Well, mine are most certainly shot....

Did a complete flush through last night with oil from a sealed container, and pushed through probably around 150ml to make sure it was clear of all contaminants, let if in the sun for 5 mins this morning and they were virtually rock hard.

Will send them in next week and see what they say.

I believe that there were a few having brake lever seizing during berg and bush this last weekend. The mechanics said they seem to see it when the temperatures are hot and some of the field experienced temps in excess of 40 according to their garmins.

I had a pair of XT levers seize up when the temperature hit 40 here in Limpopo.

Had to replace the levers, no amount of bleeding fixes it.

Shimano breaks are great but I learned not to leave my bike lying in the sun when it gets that hot.
