Buying a second hand bike

I decided to take the old trek out for a spin...i havent ridden it since i got the merida.

Merida...just over 20 k ...carbon...2 x 11 speed...etc etc etc

trek...just over 2 k ...3 x 9 speed...ally..no etc etc just plain old bike.

so after being told my trek was a donkey and if i wanted to improve my cycling i should look at a stallion...well i went and spent the money and got not quite a stallion but close enough.

I do a lot of hill climbing...a little circuit and a little mtb riding...was into the mtb riding but since riding the road bike...it has grown on me and i tend to spend more time on the road.

what do i as a novice think about the 2 bikes...you just want a trainer kind of bike to ride between mtb rides or to do the amashova etc so that you dont have to ride the mtb with road tyres...the reason i bought the road bike.

do you spend the 2 digit numbers on a bike or just get a cheapie...the circuit is going to show the results...my plan is to take the 2 bikes to the circuit...ride the one for 3 laps...them swop bikes and maybe swop again.

quite honestly after my little hill climbing session yesterday...there are a few notable differences...

lot of chain noise on the trek...because the Di2 lines up the front derailer as you move the gears up and down...you actually cant compare the Di2 to the standard shift...it is a class on its own.

easier to get up the hills when i was tired using the granny gear on the old trek...

i am a heavy fella so i cant say i noticed any weight difference between the 2 bikes while out on the road...picking them up there is a huge difference but riding them...i cant say i felt the difference...the gearing makes a huge difference...not having that little front gear on a 2 x 11 certainly makes a difference...you could change the to a compact.

the geometry on the merida suits me better and i do believe the trek is a size too big...so the merida does feel more comfortable.

the braking on the merida is a lot better but that could just be because i need to clean the rims and replace the pads on the trek.

the big question...do you spend the extra money and buy the more expensive road bike...or just get a cheapie...it is a difficult choice.

The most important thing as many people mention of this forum is the bike fit...if you choose the correct size/geometry bike and have it setup right...you would feel a lot more comfortable...which is the key to enjoying many hours on the bike...what you get on the bike and how light it is...will only start effecting you when you get competitive and riding at your peak...I have a long way to go.

Talking about buying second hand - how is finances handled, EFT but when would the seller release the bike and how do you get to trust the seller, he can always run away or avoid you?

Try cash in a public place first. I've been lucky with my latest buy. The owner of the bike lives up the road from me, so eft was the way. Found the bike here though. If you do not have 100% confidence in the seller or 100% control over the situation, go cash. Done alot of online second hand shopping, play it safe.
