Event Name: Stanford MTB Tour
When: 13 February 2016 - 14 February 2016
Where: Stanford Valley, Stanford, Western Cape
Category: MTB

The Stanford MTB Tour is a non-competitive weekend MTB stage event, similar to our Houwhoek & Greyton MTB Tours. The objective is to give MTB’s and newcomers to multi-stage events (NOT NEWCOMERS TO MTB) the opportunity to enjoy a weekend of scenic, fun and non-competitive riding. However, make sure that you are fit as each of the two stages are approximately 45 km (max climbing per stage is 800m), on gravel roads (including jeep and single tracks) and that you love riding easy single tracks.

Still no chatter about this. Well then i will say something. A little bit dissapointed with the amount of climbing on the first day, usually they say max 800m. Im big (fat) and this gets towards the side that i wont enjoy it THAT much when the climbing is this much.

Two important aspects:

- STOP & GO on R44 (at Wildekrans Wine Estate & Botriver turnoff) towards Hermanus - better options are either Clarens drive (via Rooiels & Bettysbay) or via Caledon (on the Napier road and then the Stanford turnoff);

- Water points (Coke, water, potatoes, sandwiches, bananas)- STAGE 1 on 20km at Hermanuspietersfontein Farm and water only at 40km (total stage distance on longer option is 50km / on shorter option 45km & 790m climb) - STAGE 2 the Grappa distillery next to Sir Robert Stanford Restaurant on 25km (total distance 43km & 630m climb);

- See you at Registration today 16h00 - 20h00 or Saturday morning 06h00 - 06h45 at Stanford Valley guest farm (not in Stanford) - START is at 07h00.

Drive safe.

What a lekker event. The weather played along very well, lekker routes with more single track than i expected.

Only thing i have to diss is the first A frame on day 1, the angle at the top took me by surprise when i was on it, i committed and my big chainring took a massive bite out of the top plank. Afterwards saw i wasn't the first one to hit it. Walk the second one, :blush:  but that one seemed less steep.

Funny/karma story:

On the first day there were this small downhill then over a bridge and then up on the other side on a single track. Everyone walked there, big bottle neck, but that wasn't an issue as this was not a race and everyone (almost) was in good spirits. The thing i found funny was there was two "ladys" in front of me and the one said sarcastically to the other while walking up "they should make chicken runs for the people that can't ride their bicycles".

Seeing that she was on a Pyga i thought to myself maybe this tannie can ride her bike. A bit of downhill single track followed and i soon realized she does not do the Pyga justice, i was on her back wheel the whole time, actually having to brake as not to run into her without having to pedal.

She noticed me and asked me not to ride so close to her  :w00t: so the nice guy i was, i backed off a little. I am a big guy so these tannies kicked my ass on the hills and every time i think i will now pass them a hill approaches and they get a couple of meters on me. After a couple of minutes we got a steepish hill with a few loose rocks and they Pyga tannie looses her grip and gets off. As me fatty is passing her as she didn't even bother to get out of the way she mumbled something about her *** gears. All i got see is a very new looking 1x11 setup so I dont know.

On the next climb she came past me again to join her friend, deciding i am not up for this i held back a bit to give them space because i dont want to get stuck behind them again on single track.

A couple of meters later i came down a hill to see them standing next to the trail and her friend on a Liv Lust came off her bike. Nothing serious, just a bit of skin off the leg. There was a couple of guys that had already stopped to help, but i couldn't help thinking to myself, maybe they should create chicken runs for some people.  :ph34r:

I dont give myself out as the most technical guy out there, i am not, i find myself walking obstacles way too often, but i dont diss other people on a trail openly. Because karma can be a biatch!

I will be back next year!!
