2016 motivation for getting lighter and faster

Recommended Posts

All this talk of long rides...just to finish off the year I did my longest ride today... 125.8 km...with a little difference...instead of finishing off with a nice easy 30 km flat section...I climbed back up to Pinetown.

Was super excited so I couldn't sleep...took a sleeping tablet at like 7 pm at 10.30 pm i was still wired...eventually I got to sleep at around 11.30 pm and still woke up before the alarm at 3.30 am...everything was ready waiting...pocket stuff in the shoes...lights and gps charged and on the bike...Di2 battery charged and fitted...turned the phone silent so that when Tom sent the message to say he was leaving home it wouldn't wake the whole house ( was already on the road when I got the message [emoji6])

We were on the road by 4 am...the earliest I have ever started a ride...it was still dark and the roads where empty...there was a strong NE pumping... we headed out to Durban North then turned and went back to sun coast where we met up with the people doing the Boxing Day ride...well supported again this year...with the wind behind us it was a pleasant ride all the way to toti...coffee and biscuits on the house when we arrived.

Then the ride got interesting...riding into a head wind from toti the guys had turns leading and the pace was good...my legs starting hurting so by the time I got to the bottom of Jacobs ladder I was thinking all sorts of excuses to get out of climbing all the way to Pinetown.

I put my head down and started the long haul...at least my breathing was still ok ...just the legs where suffering...with 10 km to go my legs started cramping and I had to be very careful of any sudden movements...even getting off the bike proved to be a challenge...thank goodness for ass cream.

Thanks to Tom for moral support and patients.

70 - 100 km was a bit of a jump...now 100 - 120 km with a hill at the end...eeeeish.

Well done. Good on you!

I coincidentally read your first and last post directly after each other, and it seems like you did very well to reach your goals. I really like it if motivation and hard work pays off.

Motto for 2017

"JUST KEEP TRYING"

After spending the morning riding with my daughter...I don't want to push her away from cycling by forcing her to ride her bike...or pushing her to ride down the hills over bridges etc...I asked her to just keep trying when it feels right...here she is flying down the hill.

In my case...I did a ride with the club a couple of weeks ago and didn't make it up one of the hills ( I had to walk...who walks up hills when riding a road bike [emoji57]) so I will just keep trying until I can ride from the bottom to the top.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just a quick note to thank everyone who contributed to this thread - i've taken a few days to read the whole thread.  After completing my 4th Epic in 2011 i had enough of the sufferfest, hung the bike on the wall and started motorcycling to satisfy my love for 2 wheels.  In the last 5 years I've gone 10kg's heavier from my 82kg Epic weight......time to change it and the wealth of information in this thread has motivated me to get back on the bicycle.

New tyres, handlebar grips and a decent service and the bike is ready.....let's see what 2017 holds....
