tombeej Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 OK folks, we're finally here. Just 4 more sleeps to (for many of us) the biggest day of the year after Paris-Roubaix. The Tour of Flanders, Vlaanderens Mooiste ("Flanders' Finest") is this Sunday. Time to start ramping up the excitement!
tombeej Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I know I posted these quotes in the 2015 thread, but they're just too good not to post again.... "The Tour of Flanders is unlike any other bike race in the world. It is, without question, the hardest one-day bike race ever created. What seems like a million corners, combined with twenty to thirty steep pitches and narrow roads, none of which go the same direction for more than a mile, all mix together to make it war on a bike. There isn’t a race in North America that compares. Flanders may as well be a different sport." – George Hincapie "Only those who are in top condition can say that the Ronde is not hard. For everyone else, it's the Way of the Cross." – Andrea Tafi "Looking back, you get a bit nostalgic, but from a competitive point of view, Flanders was one of the most horrible races to ride but one of the greatest races to win." – Sean Kelly "I told the organisers it wasn't a race but a war game. It's hard to explain what the Koppenberg means to a racing cyclist. Instead of being a race, it's a lottery. Only the first five or six riders have any chance: the rest fall off or scramble up as best they can. What on earth have we done to send us to hell now?" – Bernard Hinault
tombeej Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 "As a Belgian, winning Flanders for the first time is far more important than wearing the maillot jaune in the Tour" – Johan Museeuw "Many great names of Flemish cycling live on the route of the race. This closeness doesn't exist in any other country. That's what gives our identity." – Nico Mattan
'Dale Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Great poster of the winner 2015The Viking Gonna be another awesome editionLegendary stuff Thanks for the appetizer, tom' ????
Gen Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 RVV should really have it's own thread.... To me the best race of the season..
tombeej Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 The flag of Flanders, called the Vlaamse Leeuw ("Flemish Lion") or leeuwenvlag ("Lion flag"). Along with the smells of Frites and Beer mixed with the mud that cake the cobbled hellingen, the most iconic image of the race has to be the leeuwenvlag ("Lion flag"). The Flag of Flanders, is there a flag anywhere that has a more fanatical following - even by those who've never even visited the place?
