Remember that N+1 is applicable to all bike types, so definitely get your hands on that mountain bike. And if your friend is a guy that is very good news for you as we men are spectacularly easy to bribe/convince as per the hot aunty rule. Show as much cleavage as you dare (or is comfortable with showing) whilst being doe-eyed and offering to purchase a decent amount of beer. I know that would totally work on me. I am a sucker for a damsel in distress.

Oh and well done on the drawing your bidon while riding. The more you do it the easier it'll become, the same goes for riding in/with traffic.

And just some motivation to help you get that mountain bike from your friend, some photos:

Haha ok well do you know anyone so easily manipulated in PE?? [emoji23] my friend is unfortunately not a guy; I'll have to get creative in other ways...

There is never a reason to curb your excitement about cycling ;)

I'll remember this in future!!

Hell, most of us would fall for just the beer and take anything else as a bonus :P haha

Guess I'll be making a trip to the bottle store - may as well start stocking up on bribery material [emoji23]

As must as the bike is worth in case I don't get it back :P haha

Haha well then that defeats the purpose - may as well just buy myself a bike [emoji23]

Yes I do actually but he doesn't cycle afaik.

[emoji7][emoji7] where is this magical place?? It's stunning!

Just outside Grabouw headed towards Elgin territory. Gets used in the Cape Epic and other similar races. Lovely place, has a bike wash and a decent shower.

I think I'll try my luck with mntboy's suggestion - that won't cost me anything! [emoji39]

And here I thought your friend couldn't be persuaded with cleavage and doe-eyed pleading? [emoji15] [emoji10]

Was going to suggest you offer her a mani-pedi treatment on you for the loan of the bike for a month. If she does cave in, then GMBN's YouTube channel - in particular their how to videos will be your new best friend.

Awesome, adding that to my list of places I must visit :)

Haha who knows, maybe she'll be flattered [emoji39]

Awesome read.  For those of us that have been doing this 'forever', it's great to be reminded of the simple things that make riding a bike so much fun.    (Remember these posts in a year or so when you are a pro, read them again and be reminded that it's about the small things.)

There are a bunch of PE guys and gals on BikeHub.  Drop a post in 'grouprides'.  I'm sure there will be a few folk willing to join you and show you a few routes - road or mtb.

And if you don't come right, I know a few folk that don't frequent BikeHub but would be more than willing to show you the ropes.  Let me know and I'll forward direct contact details.

That indeed you must do. Just another reason for you to visit Cape Town and surrounds.

I am sure she will be very flattered and yes you better save those pictures for when you need them. More especially when you need to coerce Lurch into parting with his 94.7 entry. Luckily I don't do races, just rides.

With my track record I will be out with an injury and looking to flog it anyway :P

Just as long as you don't transfer your bad luck onto her ride then, it'll be perfectly ok!
