1 x 10 conversion - what size rear derailleur

I do apologize if there is a thread for this already, did look but couldn't find the info I am looking for.

 

I have recently converted my full sus bike (not sure if full sus makes a difference) to 1 x 10 with a 32t narrow wide up front and a 11 x 42 (extended range with a oneup) at the rear. At the moment I have a x9 type 2 with a long cage but I have a spare x0 with a damaged clutch that has a medium cage.

 

So my question is, will my gear range be able to run with a medium cage instead of a long cage and will my x9 be compatible with the x0's medium cage ? Lastly if everything is compatible will I need to shorten my chain when swopping from the long to medium cage ?

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

Sram yes it should. Shimano - no best to get long cage

Dont know about combatability. Should not need to shorten chainn.

 

I found with long cage that i needed to extend my chain. Normal chain 114 links to short. But then i am on an XL frame
