Four chains to a cassette.  Four cassettes to a set of chain rings.

Or so that's the way I heard it.

I always found the cassettes last a bit better than the chain rings.

So, for maximum drive chain life expectancy, efficiency of ZAR's per mile km here's what to do:

1. buy 3 extra cassettes.

2. buy 15 extra chains.

3. after every ride, change chain.

4. after every chain has been used once, change cassette.

5 after every cassette and chain has been used in rotation, start from chain 1, cassette 1 again.

6. when all chains and cassettes are worn out, chain rings will be worn out, so go and buy 16 chains, 4 cassettes, 1 set of chain rings and start over.

Or just ride until you get chain suck, replace the cassette and chain and whatever ring is causing the chain suck (or granny and mid if you follow the 'always be prepared' theory).  Buy a cheap cassette - steel ones last longer then cassettes made of unobtainium/32yo malt whisky alloy.  And weigh two mouthfuls of water heavier.

Not sure anyone but me keeps a bike long enough to wear out a big ring.

Thanks all, clearly not an easy question...

Surely 1500km shouldn't not be a problem?

Might just be on the limit, or even stretched beyond already. I alternate between 2 10-speed chains (1 x XT and 1 x KMC) on my 3x10 full-sus KTM, and have done this since new. The KMC chain is really "loose", and really noisy on the cassette, even though my chain-tool says it's not worn out yet, while the XT chain is still hunkydory. This is at 1700km on the bike according to my Gramin Connect.

I think you will get a hundred different opinions/views on this one, but if your chain is jumping on the cassette/chainring, or is too noisy for you, they are really cheap enough to change out for your peace of mind (XT HG95 chains from CRC are R290-odd, plus shipping, still much cheaper than locally available)
