Front Derailleur

Slight spin off from this thread. I remembered Westdene Cycles and contacted them and they in formed that they do have the part. Now this is where it becomes interesting and I need help in the way I understand the terminology because I do not think the part will work.

Looking at the derailleur and the bike and this is my understanding.

1. The shifter cable if it runs on the top tube and ends just beneath where the seat stay and seat tube connects(cable housing) and the cable connects from there to the derailleur to shift...Is it called a top pull?

2. The shifter cable runs down the downtube and ends on the lower part of the seat tube just above the bottom bracket(cable housing) and the cable connects to the derailleur to shift...Is it called a bottom pull?

Reason for asking is that there was an argument with the guys at Westdene cycles that the derailleur is the correct one. The derailleur supplied the bolt for the cable clamp is on top and with a downward movement similates the shifting hence my understanding a bottom pull. The derailleur that broke does also have a bolt on top but the movement is upwards to simulate shifting hence my understanding top pull.

You are correct, BUT some derailleurs are dual pull, so the cable will essentially do a loop if coming from the top, or no loop and just connect to the bolt if coming from the bottom.  It may be one of these and they're just calling it the wrong thing?

Thanks dirtypot...Makes sense should there be a guide for the cable "running to the back" for the derailleur? Currently there is just a short cable guide...

  • 4 weeks later...

Again on this topic....

He managed to source a SLX front derailleur for his bike, but it does not fit. We just fitted it to ride the monster but he did not finish due to broken rear derailleur hanger.

He was off for a weeks and asked me to look again at the front derailleur.

Shifting has some issues (shifter related but that is another issue), but the real problem is fitment. The derailleur is to small or whatever. When in the middle chainring and the lowest gear the chain is rubbing on the bottom part of the derailleur cage. The derailleur is mounted in such a way that there is about a 1mm clearance from the large chainring teeth and the derailleur cage but still the chain rubs against the bottom of the cage.

Is the front derailleur chainring teeth dependable?
